Administrative History

Originally part of the Durham County school system, Oak Grove School opened in 1927 to serve grades 1 through 11. It was formed from the merger of Mineral Springs, Southview, Southview Annex, and Redwood Schools and named for Oak Grove Township, one of the original townships in Durham County. Mr. J. W. Neal was the first principal. With the opening of Southern High School in 1956, the high school grades left Oak Grove School, and when Neal Middle School opened, Oak Grove was transformed into an elementary school, serving kindergarten through fifth grade. In 1994 the school moved into a new facility constructed at the same location on Wake Forest Road.
