The collection contains photographs, slides, accreditation certificates, and student projects from Hillandale Elementary School in Durham, NC. Slides include a slideshow called "The Future Comes to Durham," which comprises images of newspaper articles about construction projects planned for Durham and images of buildings throughout the city. There are also slides of school activities, students, and staff. Student projects include "Stories, Poems and Sketches," a collection published annually showcasing student work.

Administrative History

Hillandale Elementary School opened sometime before 1908 as the Reservoir School, so named because of its proximity to the city reservoir on Huckleberry Hill, at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Rose of Sharon Road. In 1921 it was renamed Hillandale School. Around 1931 the school relocated to a building on Hillandale Road and Carver Street, where it remained until 1993. The school then relocated further north on Hillandale Road.
