Biographical / Historical

Eta Chapter was chartered on June 17, 1939 at the Washington Duke Hotel in Durham with an initial membership of 13. It is a local chapter of the Eta State organization of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Eta Chapter provides professional and social support to Durham area women educators. Notable chapter activities include scholarships for aspiring educators, support for beginning teachers, professional development opportunities for its members, and literacy advocacy. Strong membership growth in its earliest decades prompted it to sponsor the Alpha Pi Chapter in 1959 for members from Orange and Chatham Counties, and the Beta Iota and Beta Kappa Chapters in 1967 for members from Durham and Person Counties.
