Biographical / Historical
Durham Hosiery Mill Company started in 1898 as the result of the merger of the Durham Hosiery Company (organized by George Graham in 1894) and the Golden Belt Hosiery Company (organized by Julian Carr and John W. Smith the same year). Julian Carr took over operations of the company and a new mill was built in the Edgemont community, which was at the time on the eastern edge of Durham. By 1907, the company had 1000 employees operating 11,000 spindles, 64 "cards," and 1,000 knitting machines. The company thrived through World War I, which increased demand for the cotton hosiery produced there. However, with the advent of silk hosiery in the 1920s, demand fell dramatically for cotton socks and the mill complex closed in 1934.
