Tyson Family papers
Scope and Contents
Collection of primarily financial materials that belonged to Samuel R. and Carrie Tyson, who lived in Durham from the early 1900s until the 1950s, when they passed away. There is a letter from their nephew who was a seaman in World War II, telling them that he has established them as the beneficiaries of his life insurance policy if he dies at sea. There are also several receipts from Durham businesses in the 1930s, including the Criterion Soda Shop and the Palms Restaurant.

Biographical / Historical
Samuel R. Tyson was born in Greenville, North Carolina in 1871 and died in Durham in 1953. He was married to Carrie Tyson and is listed as living in Durham as early as the 1909 city directory. He owned the George Junior Cigar Company in Durham. Carrie Fitts Tyson was born in Warren County, North Carolina in 1879 and died in Durham in 1959. They had a son together, George Fitts Tyson.
