Biographical / Historical

Materials in the Foushee Family Collection relate to Howard Alexander Foushee (1870-1916) and his daughter Frances Leak Foushee (1908-1968). Mr. Foushee was a lawyer in Durham, a charter member of the North Carolina Bar Association, and one of the first members of the board of trustees of the Durham Public Library. He also participated in politics, serving on various committees with the Durham County Democratic Party between 1896 and 1911 as well as in the state Senate, elected in both 1901 and 1905. Howard was appointed superior court judge in 1911 and served until his resignation due to health concerns in 1913. Frances Leak Foushee grew up in Durham and attended Goucher College in Baltimore as well as Duke University, traveled extensively overseas in the 1930s, and married Hunter McGuire Sweaney of Durham in 1940. Frances's diaries are a source of information about daily life in Durham, written in her young adulthood.
